What "renter-friendly" actually means
A renter-friendly smart lock is one that (a) installs over the existing deadbolt without changing the keyway, (b) leaves the original lock cylinder intact so the landlord’s master key still works (when required by lease), and (c) can be uninstalled quickly when you move out. That narrows the field more than most "best-of" lists admit.
Our most-installed apartment picks
August Wi-Fi Smart Lock
Mounts to the inside of the existing deadbolt, the outside of the door looks completely unchanged. Best choice when your lease prohibits visible hardware changes or your landlord uses a master key. Works with Apple Home, Alexa, and Google Home.
Yale Assure Lock 2 (with WiFi module)
Replaces the deadbolt entirely with a sleek keypad model. Choose the version with the keyhole if your lease requires it; choose the keyless version if you control your own access. Excellent battery life and very clean look.
Schlage Encode
Built-in Wi-Fi (no hub needed), classic keypad layout, and the most reliable mechanical action of any smart lock we install. A good choice when your apartment has a tight or older door, the motor is strong and forgiving of mild misalignment.
Level Bolt (or Level Lock)
Hides entirely inside the door, no visible smart-lock hardware at all. Pricier, but the best option for renters who want zero changes to the door’s appearance.
What to check before buying
- Door thickness, most apartment doors are 1-3/4″, but verify before ordering
- Backset, usually 2-3/8″ in residential, but some heavy doors are 2-3/4″
- Whether your lease requires a physical key override
- Whether the building uses a master key system you must remain part of
Get it installed properly
Smart locks live or die on door alignment. A binding deadbolt drains batteries and triggers half-locked states that drive renters insane. Our smart lock installation service includes door, frame, and strike adjustment as part of every visit, which is why our smart-lock callbacks are very rare.
